Position Purpose:
The entry-level Electrical Engineer I position is an integral part of Basin Electric’s system protection team, dedicated to learning and contributing to the reliability and efficiency of our electrical grid. By immersing themselves in power system protection, relay coordination, and control strategies, they actively support initiatives to strengthen critical infrastructure, minimize downtime, and enhance the overall performance of our power utility system. Moreover, they have the opportunity to grow and develop under the guidance of experienced professionals, setting the foundation for a successful career in the field. This position is identified as a Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP) related position which may involve physical and/or logical access to Bulk Electric System (BES) cyber related assets or systems.
Essential Duties
Complete daily Transmission Availability Reports (TAR), detailing Basin Electric equipment and line outages and operations, and gather data related to protection system operations for the purpose of determining correct or incorrect operations and for completion of Protection System Operation Analysis Reports (PSOAR).
Compile quarterly Transmission Availability Data System (TADS) reports.
Complete North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) Misoperations Information Data Analysis System (MIDAS) and North American Transmission Forum (NATF) misoperation reports.
Assist with the maintenance of the database for ASPEN Oneliner fault analysis software.
Assist with the development or modification of new or existing protective relay settings.
Assist with the completion of projects involving revenue meter replacement and revenue meter additions.
Work with field and drafting personnel to complete record drawings, while providing quality control of record drawings by drawing modification content and determining whether other drawings are affected by field modifications.
Perform all work in compliance with NERC CIP (Critical Infrastructure Protection), PRC (Protection and Control), and FAC (Facilities Design, Connections, and Maintenance) standards.
Qualifications :
Electrical Engineer I:
- Four-year degree from an Engineering Accreditation Commission (EAC)/Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) accredited electrical engineering program.
Electrical Engineer II:
Four-year degree from an Engineering Accreditation Commission (EAC)/Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) accredited electrical engineering program and
Three years of related electrical engineering experience.
An engineer in training (EIT) or Fundamentals of Engineering Exam (FE) certificate is required.
Electrical Engineer III:
Four-year degree from an Engineering Accreditation Commission/Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (EAC/ABET) accredited electrical engineering program and
Six years of related electrical engineering experience, which must include at least two years of combined experience in two or more of following: high-voltage substation protection design, short circuit studies/modeling, relay setting/communication, or fault analysis/event reporting.
An engineer in Training (EIT) certificate or Fundamentals of Engineering Exam (FE) certificate.
Other Requirements:
Able to demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Broad technical knowledge of electrical engineering principles and practices.
Proficient with personal computers and Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
A valid driver’s license.

Typical Physical/Mental/Environmental Demands:
This position requires frequent sitting; and occasional standing, walking, bending, climbing, kneeling, reaching, crawling, use of keyboard/computer, pushing/pulling up to 100 pounds, and lifting/carrying more than 50 pounds. Requires finger dexterity, good hearing and vision, and the ability to perform close work. Requires the ability to analyze data/reports and conduct research; implement recommendations; develop plans, procedures, and goals; and present information to others. May be required to work under pressure due to conflicting priorities and deadlines. Occasionally works in conditions of dirt/dust, fumes, chemicals, extreme heat and cold, vibration, noise, poor ventilation, electrical risks, and confined areas. May be required to occasionally work at heights up to 50 feet, which requires the use of safety equipment, including a harness, in accordance with ANSI Z359 standards. The incumbent must be respirator qualified and able to operate a motor vehicle. Travel to plant sites and substations are required, either by operating a motor vehicle or traveling in Cooperative or commercial aircraft. Equipment operated includes computers, various control devices, electrical test equipment, and normal shop tools.
